If, like pretty much everyone else with a Netflix subscription at the moment, you've found yourself gripped and heartbroken by the docu-series, Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, you're far from alone. The three-parter looks at the immense power the Murdaugh family held within their South Carolina community, after a devastating boating accident saw nineteen-year-old Mallory Beach sadly killed. Wealthy student, Paul Murdaugh, was the one driving the boat at the time, whilst under the influence of alcohol – and later used his well-connected family to try and avoid being held accountable.

Also on the boat was Mallory's best friend and Paul's then-girlfriend, Morgan Doughty, who speaks openly in the documentary about the allegedly difficult and abusive relationship she once had with Paul. Close friends Miley Altman, Miley's boyfriend Connor Cook, and Mallory's boyfriend Anthony Cook, all of whom had been at the same social gathering that same night, were also on the boat at the time of the crash and appear in the docu-series.

Paul and his mother, Maggie, were later found dead too, having been shot at the family's hunting lodge. Alex is currently on trial for their murder and appears, according to phone call snippets played in the docu-series, to have maintained a good relationship with his other son, Buster, Paul's brother.

The family are originally from Long Island, New York. Bill works as a landscaper and Diane is a nurse – they both appear in the series too, discussing the impact the various tragedies mentioned above, in particular the deaths of Mallory and Paul, had on their daughter and the wider community.

When speaking about her relationship with Paul, Morgan says: "I think that our relationship is just something that I really clung to just because when it was good, it was really good. But when it was bad, it was really bad." She also sadly claims that Paul would kick her, punch her, and on one occasion (after his older brother Buster's graduation party) even grabbed her by the throat.
