Sesame Prawn Toast - Khin's Kitchen - Easy Crispy Prawn Toast Recipe (1)

Prawn toast is a classic dim sum dish, that is originated in China and is popular across the world. You can find it on the menu of every Chinese restaurant and takeaways in the UK. Also known as ' shrimp toast ' in the US. Small triangle bread loaded with prawn and sesame seeds deep-fried to crispy golden. One of my favourite finger food to serve at gatherings. These crispy bites are super addictive and utterly simple.

When you order from the takeaway, sometimes it can be too greasy and you get only the taste of bread and sesame seeds. Prawn fillings can be found nowhere. That's the reason I tried to make it at home. You can make them for your parties and impress your guests.

What do we need

  • Bread - We usually use medium-thick white sandwich bread to make the prawn toast with no crust. You can also try it with your favourite sandwich bread with or without the crust. Wholemeal bread goes well too.
  • Prawn - I used peeled and deveined prawns to save some time. You can either use fresh or frozen prawns/shrimp. If you use frozen prawns, make sure to defrost them prior to overnight or at least 8 hours. Pat dry any excess moisture with a paper towel before you add in the food processor.
  • Sesame seeds - You will need 5 to 6 tablespoons of white sesame seeds for this recipe. Feel free to add some black sesame seeds to create more texture.
  • Seasonings - Simply season the prawn fillings with light soy sauce, sesame oil, white pepper, sugar, garlic paste, spring onions and salt to taste. You will also need one egg white and corn starch to achieve a smooth and sticky prawn paste spread.
  • Oil for frying - Use neutral flavoured oil to fry. You can use sunflower, peanut, canola, vegetable oil, etc.
  • Dippping Sauce - Prawn toast is delicious on it's own without any dipping sauce but sometimes I love to serve it with a spicy mayo dipping sauce. Sweet chilli sauce or hot chilli sauce goes well too.

How To Make Sesame Prawn Toast :

  • Dip it into the sesame seeds, fillings side down and toss the excess sesame seeds out before frying.
  • Frying: Heat the oil into medium heat. Fry the filling side down until crispy, then flip gently and fry the other side until golden brown.
  • Dipping Sauce: I usually love to serve with my homemade spicy mayo dipping sauce. To make a spicy mayo dipping you need regular mayonnaise, chilli sauce, lime juice and chilli flakes or Japanese shichimi chilli. Whip all together in a sauce bowl and ready to serve!
  • Or you can serve with your favourite sweet chilli sauce, hot chilli sauce. Serve with ketcup or regular mayonese for young children who can't eat chilli.

Top Tips

  • Use neutral flavour oil which doesn't have strong flavour on its own.
  • Dry stale bread, baguette are ideal to make prawn toast as they don't absorb the oil much. That is one of the secrets to achieving the super crispy, airy, non-greasy prawn toast.
  • It's important to fry with medium heat, about 320° F to prevent from getting burnt quickly. You can either check the oil temperature with a food thermometer, wooden chopstick or with small bread pieces, once the oil bubbles sizzle steadily it's ready to fry.
