The majority of Riker's inmates are pretrial defendants meaning that they are being held on bail awaiting trial. The others are convicted and serving sentences that are typically a year or shorter which is common in misdemeanor cases. Although you can be sentenced to Rikers for a felony conviction, if your felony sentence is longer than a year you will probably be sent to state prison.

New York State Prison

New York Sate Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is the department of the State of New York responsible for incarcerating inmates in over 50 correctional facilities across the State of New York some of which are almost 200 years old. State prison is a possibility in situations where the period of incarceration exceeds one year. So, if someone in New York City is being sentenced to a sentence of three months, this sentence would be done in Rikers.
