Getting treatment at the hospital: admissions

Luxembourg’s hospital services are of good quality. The nursing staff is competent and the facilities are modern and well equipped. The safety of the patients taken care of is one of the key points of the Luxembourg hospital care.

Emergency services

In case of emergency, you can call the European emergency number 112. The operator will send the appropriate emergency services, which may include an ambulance to transport you to the nearest hospital.

Languages

Luxembourg has three official languages: Luxembourgish, French and German. Most of the country’s health professionals and hospital staff speak at least one of these languages, as well as English.

Admission to the hospital

You can come to the hospital for a medical examination, a simple consultation, a scheduled hospitalization or in case of emergency.

For your admission, you will have to go to the reception of the concerned service with an identity card, a proof of your insurance and possible complementary .If you do not have health insurance, you will be asked to pay a deposit.

If you have medical records or prescriptions, it is also helpful to bring them.

The admission of a minor is made with the authorization of the person in charge of parental authority.

In case of emergency admission, these administrative procedures can be completed later.

Without a medical emergency and outside of nighttime hours, consult a physician or a Medical Home before going to the emergency room.

Payment and reimbursem*nt of hospital care

Hospitalization and medical treatment can be expensive in Luxembourg.

It is important to have valid health insurance coverage, either through your employer or a private policy. This will help cover the costs of your hospitalization and medical treatment.

In the case of outpatient care, the patient will pay the doctor directly upon discharge or by sending an invoice to the home. The patient will then have to send the claim to the health insurance company.

In the event of hospitalization, the cost of the stay is in principle paid by the CNS (third-party payer). A daily contribution for those over 18 years of age must be paid directly by the insured.

Please note that 1st class supplements are not covered by health insurance. The insured must then have previously contracted a supplementary health insurance. We tell you here why.

For cross-border workers, please refer to the CNS procedures.

Visiting a patient in a hospital, clinic or maternity ward

Visitors are generally allowed in Luxembourg hospitals, but there may be restrictions due to COVID-19 or other reasons. It is best to check with the hospital in advance and follow any guidelines or protocols in place for visitors.

Visiting hours with patients or patients are strictly defined. Visitors must comply in order to allow the patients to rest and the nursing staff to do their work. Generally, visits are allowed in the afternoons only. Check directly with the hospital beforehand.
